The lockdown on kalapani dispute, a strategic India-Nepal China tri junction after Nepal is claiming it to be a part of them. India and Nepal arguing over kalapani after six months India released a map placing kalapani an area which falls under tri nation between India, Nepal and china.

Whereas Kathmandu unveiled a new map this week showing the region along with Limpiyadhura and lipulekh areas in Uttarakhand as a part of their territory.  The dispute about the areas is not new it has cropped up every now and then since 1960.

River lying at the heart of the border:

India and Nepal arguing over kalapani at present kalapani is a 372 sq km area, which is controlled by Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) which has a post there since 1962. The entire India-Nepal border is 1758 km long. India is claiming kalapani as a part of Uttarakhand. The kalapani valley falls along the Indians route to Kailash mansarovar an ancient pilgrimage.

The digression has led to territorial disputes between the two countries. Nepal claims Kalapani west is the main kali, and thus the country has territorial rights to the region.  India hold the that ridgeline to kalapani falls in India.

A high mountain Lipulekh is one on strategic interest to new Delhi. The pas is situated along with 80 km long Uttarakhand Nepal border.  The lowest point is 11,980 ft the highest being 20,280 ft. it helps India track Chinese movements in the region. Kalapani significance is that it is centuries old for it’s location on the trade and pilgrim route to Tibet.

 

The current tension:

India and Nepal arguing over kalapani In November 2019, India released the new political map following the reorganization of J&K. the map showed that kalapani as apart of Indian Territory Katmandu raised concerns and suggested talks be held on the dispute.

Tensions grew early this month when defense minister Mr. Rajnath Singh inaugurated an 80 km long high altitude road from Dharchula (Uttarakhand) to Lipulekh pass.  The road is to serve as a faster route for Kailash mansarovar yatra pilgrims.
