Bihar CM Asked Officials to Cover All Open Manholes by December 30
PATNA: On Tuesday, the Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) started covering all the manholes in the capital, two days after Bihar Chief Minister (CM) Nitish Kumar asked the officials to do so by December 30.
The order was issued in the light of the disappearance of 10-year-old boy Deepak who fell into an open drain near Mohanpur sump house in Punaichak locality on November 17. A joint team of the State Disaster Response Force and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) failed to locate the child dead or alive even after rigorous 8 days of search operations.
Chief Minister instructed officials to do so in order to prevent recurrence of such a tragic incident.
The CM held the review meeting with the officials of Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC), urban development and housing department (UDHD), and Patna district administration and enquired about the details of the rescue operation which continued on the eighth day on Saturday.
The Bihar CM told the PMC and district officials to cover all the open manholes by December 30 and take necessary steps to free the city roads of stray animals.
Anupam Kumar Suman – PMC commissioner earlier informed the CM that around 30,000 manholes in the capital, at least 1,000 are lying open and posing danger to the lives of the common people, especially children.
In the past, open manholes have claimed several lives.
Vishal Anand, the PMC deputy commissioner said, “We’ve started covering open manholes and expect to complete the task by December 30”.
Deputy CM Sushil Kumar Modi suggested that the state government should bring a new policy confirming proper cleanliness and covering of the manholes.
Further, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar said, various kinds of accidents takes place due to the movement of stray animals. He asked Ravi Kumar (Patna DM) to take necessary steps to keep all stray animals in the gaushala.
The CM told to the Patna DM, if needed, impose fine on the owners of the stray animals. Also increases the capacity of gaushala and the number of its employees.
Nitish Kumar instructed the UDHD officials to make arrangements in order to hook up stray animals in other cities after improving the arrangements in the PMC area. Suresh Kumar Sharma (UDHD minister) also attended the meeting.
