Patna Airport will be Able to Handle 80 Lakh Passengers Annually
The construction work for the new terminal building is underway with the new terminal Patna airport will be able to handle 80 Lakh passengers annually. The airport authorities expect to complete the development work by March 2023.
The work on the extension of Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport terminal building as part of plans to increase its annual capacity to manage eight million passengers by March 2023 from around 45lakh currently. The extension will increase the number of passenger’s check-in counters from 15 to 20,
The new terminal building will be built at an estimated cost of 698 crore, which the Patna airport authorities hope to complete by March 2023, the Airport Authority of India (AAI) tweeted.
“With separate departure and arrival, the new multi-level terminal building will be 7 lakh sqft in area. The departure level that will connect the flyover will be well-connected with the arrival via staircase and lifts. The building will be able to handle 8 million passengers a year,” said AAI in a tweet.
It will create space for installing 2 additional hand baggage and scanning machines from existing three each, and women frisking booths from two to four.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) on Tuesday issued a statement and said the terminal building is being extended to decongest and for creating new infrastructure to equip the airport to handle eight million passengers.
Director of Patna airport BCH Negi said the new area of 2,000 sq meters (approx) will significantly reduce waiting time in queues and improve passenger movement.
The current area of Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport terminal building is 7,200 sq metres, which is insufficient in handling almost 45 lakh passengers yearly.
The transformation will increase the Airport area to 7 Lakh sq feet. Patna airport will have a separate departure (upper) and arrival (lower) levels.

The departure level will be connected with flyover to the airport’s entry gate. It will also be connected to the multi-level car parking.
The new terminal building will have
- 52 check-in counters
- In-line baggage handling system
- 5 conveyor belts for arriving passengers
- lifts
- Escalators
- Interiors depicting Bihar’s art and culture
- Commercial space of 62,000 sq feet for retail shops and food and beverage outlets.
- Conveyor belts from two to three
Project cost of Rs 1216.90 crore.
Scheduled to be completed by March 2023.
The work on the modernisation of the Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport was taken up last year to cater to the rising passenger traffic.
