Coronavirus in Bihar: First Disinfectant Tunnel Set Up in Patna
The motive behind Patna’s 1st Disinfectant Tunnels is simple, wash your hands and walk through the tunnel, in which overhead sprayers sprinkle disinfectant. This two- sanitization process can significantly reduce the number of virus from the body and it would take only a few seconds.
The person enters the tunnel, he or she will be sprayed with sodium hypochlorite with dihydrogen oxide (diluted sanitizer) from all four sides to eliminate the virus on that person’s body.
This automated liquid spray is a mixture of
- sodium hypochlorite,
- water-soluble polymer
- iodine
which saturates the environment and therefore disinfects all surfaces through its nozzles fitted in the tunnel. each installation consumes 50 liters of the solution in one hour and can operate for 16 hours at a stretch.
Places in Patna where Disinfectant Tunnels will come up
Four more disinfectant tunnels will come up at the following places in Patna.

In a statement, it was declared that the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines are being followed. The unit was tested and recommended by a team of doctors who have believed it safe.
“Sita Sahu (mayor) said every person has to pass through this tunnel before entering the vegetable market. The shoppers would be sprayed with foggy disinfectant vapor to mitigate the spread of Coronavirus.”
“Since, many people are not following social distancing norms at market places, especially vegetable markets, the PMC has initiated this measure to contain the virus,” she added.
China began using this method in February when a disinfectant tunnel was installed in the city of Chongqing.
The idea for this system in India came from Young Indians, a non-profit entity with the CII (Confederation of Indian Industry). Their initiative was accepted by the administration.
Disinfectant Tunnels are being used in cities like Hubli, Hyderabad, Gora, and Mysore. The tunnel was installed jointly by Tata and Ayshra Technofab and each tunnel costs Rs2 lakh.
