PMCH Soon To Be Upgraded To World’s Largest Hospital With 5,462-Bed
Patna to get world’s biggest hospital soon
The state cabinet of Bihar have approved a health department’s proposal to make PMCH (Patna Medical College Hospital) the world’s largest hospital with 5,462-bed hospital. With Rs 5,540 Crore This was one of the 37 proposal approved by the cabinet.
In an official function chief minister Nitish Kumar launch proposed 500-bed hospital on the premises of the IGIMS (Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Science), and said, in the next four to five years The 1700 bed Patna Medical College and Hospital will be upgraded into a 5,462 bed hospital of international standard with ultra-modern medical facilities
As per the up-gradation plan, a number of multi-storeyed green buildings with modern fire and other safety measures and multi-level parking slots will be built in the Patna Medical Collage Hospital.
According to Sanjay Kumar (Principal Secretary of Health and cabinet secretariat department),
It would take six years to complete the project, but CM Nitish Kumar wants it to be completed before that.
We will try to complete it in four to five years, he said that the world’s biggest hospital today is of 3,500 beds in Belgrade (the capital of Serbia).
The PMCH campus will expand over 72 lakh square foot area which will houses green buildings’ having fire safety and medical gas pipeline provisions.
It will also have a dharmshala of 450 beds, separate power substation and facility for treatment of excreta and dirty water. The present capacity of PMCH is 1,700 beds.
The Upgraded PMCH will have 250 MBBS seats against the existing 150, and 200 PG seats against the existing 146. The Bihar Medical Infrastructure Corporation Limited will execute Rs 5,540 crore over this project.

- General and paediatric surgery – 522 beds
- Orthopaedics – 702 beds
- Paediatrics – 610 beds
- Obstetrics and gynaecology – 462 beds
- Ophthalmology – 240 beds
- ICU – 217 beds
- Gastroenterology – 72 beds
- Endocrinology – 85 beds
- Nephrology – 75 beds
- Neurology – 75 beds
- Cardiology – 72 beds
- Burns – 30 beds
- Urology – 75 beds
- Neurosurgery – 72 beds
- Plastic surgery – 50 beds
- Psychiatry – 75 beds
- Organ transplant – 55 beds
A complete project report is being ready. Demolition of current buildings of PMCH and shifting of beds and other medical facilities would be carried out phase-wise without disturbing the patients.
The upgraded PMCH hospital will be linked with the proposed double-decker flyover along Ashok Rajpath and upcoming Gandhi Path. With parking facility for 3,435 vehicles.
