Bina Devi the Mushroom Lady of Bihar Changed the Lives of 10K Women

Few years ago, Bina Devi got married to a family situated in Munger district. She used to spend her days by cleaning, cooking and doing household chores.  Any work doing the outside of the house was considered beyond the capacity of women.

Mrs. Bina Devi the Mushroom Lady of Bihar  received the award from the President of India. Very few people know about her. She is the encouragement for many women; she empowered hundreds of her sisterhood. She has given the name Mushroom mahila.

Beginning

Mrs. Bina was trained by Munger’s Krishi Vigyan Kendra (Agriculture Science Centre), an agriculture extension under the government. The training was done to empower rural woman to get involved in organic farming that will not only benefit their households but also contribute to the society.

During the training program Mrs. Bina Devi showed interest was in mushroom farming. In the year 2013, Bina began her journey of breaking gender stereotypes from within the doors of her home. At the initial stages people used to make fun of her. They would laugh for the crazy thing being done by Mrs. Bina Devi.

She stuck to her plans and worked very hard and in no time results were out in the open for all to them to see. Her actions did prove the merit of her work and changed the perspective of the world. Sooner the later other women join her.

 

Achievements

Mrs. Bina Devi received the award from the President of India. Bina Devi the Mushroom Lady of Bihar was also been involved in spreading digital literacy among women and was awarded by Tata Trusts, for training 700 women how to use mobile. She has also helped 2500 farmers create self help groups, and taught them the System of rice intensification (SRI) method of crop farming.

 

She also became the   village head of Dhauri panchayats for 5 years. She not only promoted organic and mushroom farming but also trained people in vermin- compost production, organic insecticide and dairy farming.

She single handedly supports an entire family of 18 members with her monthly earning of Rs 90,000. She is financing the education of her four children. She has 3 sons and a daughter.  All of them are studying outside in various parts of India.  Apart from his boys her daughter also perusing engineering.

She wants her daughter to be independent in future. Because she beliefs that women can’t be lagging behind. Women should become independent in her life. Women should be always encouraged and supported in doing good work by the society.
